Nicolaus Visscher II (1649-1702).  “Novissima et accuratissima XVII Provinciarum Germaniae Inferioris Delineatio.”  [Holland and Belgium].

Amsterdam: N. Visscher, ca. 1670.  17 1/2 x 21 1/4 (neatlines).  Outline original color in the body of the map; cartouches colored.  Some separation along bottom center fold repaired, and repaired tears along bottom margin, else good condition.

A lovely map of the Low Countries by Dutch cartographer Nicolaus Visscher with the north oriented to the right.  This map has two detailed cartouches, and covers most of present-day Netherlands and Belgium.  The information is copious and quite accurate, as with most maps of their own lands by cartographers in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.  The decorative features of the map are outstanding, and they are here extremely well presented with the rich impression of this wonderful engraving.  The combination of decorative title and dedicatory cartouches is reminiscent of work by the Bleau family earlier in the century.  A superb map from the Dutch cartographic tradition
